(IN STOCK EARLY JUNE)
The new album of unearthly black metal from Yellow Eyes, the opus "Confusion Gate".
This deep into their career, they could've released a predictable follow-up to "Rare Field Ceiling" and called it a day. However, they've gone above-and-beyond with "Confusion Gate" - it's easily one of the best things they've ever done, and further cements their legacy in black metal.
"Suspension Moon" is absolutely outstanding - their command of mournful, piercing dissonance is on full display. "Brush the Frozen Horse" is another highlight with its urgent, newfound venom. But they haven't merely descended into hell, either - acoustic interludes, while perhaps less vital this time, are well-paced and appreciated.
People might get reminded of Deathspell Omega and Mgla, which aren't typical reference points for this band - and they lack the ideological madness of both - but the uncompromising intensity remains. "Confusion Gate" is a fiery capstone on a truly impressive career.
Their music remains an alchemy of black metal fervour and still pending to the atmospheric side, and outer metal textures somehow ritualistic at times, but with such duality is sharpened, deliberate, almost fatalistic.
Hopefully, they'll continue blazing this haunting trail of magick for years to come!
